Overview Study Plan

Reach the Master level

You will develop the core competencies that are required so that you, as an engineer and leader in Industry 4.0, can help shape industrial success and sustain the future of work.

During your master’s program, you will gain the relevant expertise through a variety of practical modules focusing on engineering and economics.

In the engineering science modules, you will acquire in-depth technical and methodological skills in the planning and development of smart products. You will learn to comprehend product development as an interdisciplinary task at the interface of technology and strategy throughout the entire life cycle of products and processes. You will engage with the disciplines of Smart Product Engineering, Smart Service Engineering and Smart Prototyping.

In applied project work, you will assess the technological and business challenges that need to be considered when developing smart products and will translate them into solutions. You will also plan and develop interdisciplinary teamwork (systematically and methodically) for complex products.

In addition, you will learn to evaluate the economic potential of smart services and the steps required to integrate them into existing structures through applied modules. You will tackle concrete practical challenges and develop a complex service product or product service system.

In the economic modules, you will deal with specific and relevant strategies for a successful Industry 4.0 transformation. You will acquire in-depth technical and methodological knowledge in Industry 4.0 Transformation Management and Industry 4.0 Workplace Management.

You will develop, specify and implement adaptations of business models as well as transformation and work processes for companies (before, during and after Industry 4.0 transformation) in applied project work.

During your master’s program, you will expand your existing knowledge of Digital Leadership with a two-phase Leadership Assessment (in the first and fourth semesters).

You will learn how to plan and implement a change project aligned with Industry 4.0 that has the objective of adjusting strategies, structures and processes.

In addition, you will develop consulting competences for transformation processes in Industry 4.0 as part of a practical project and deepen your qualitative and quantitative research methods during an applied research project.

Select 2 out of 3: Become a specialist

You will deepen your acquired Industry 4.0 skills by selecting a mandatory elective subject.

This also applies to your elective subject. You decide which specialization suits you best. When making your choice, consider the experience that you have gained from jobs, internships and projects and the demands that the job market places on you.

Become a director for the factory of the future and bring systems together into one big picture. You create the interactions and dialogs that standardize and automatize processes and you ensure that machines communicate with each other and organize themselves. Smart Factory concepts and technologies (e.g. Cyber Physical Systems) are the script that not only to continues but also rewrites the current developments and demands placed on industry, society and people. You know which technological and economic requirements need to be considered and which legal and ethical aspects are key for the respective scenarios. Your knowledge on how to plan and develop standardization, automatization and rationalization is the result of applied project work. You know what is required in order to integrate Industry 4.0 into existing organizations and structures.

Become an architect for tomorrow’s data environments. You bring together all the company’s key interfaces, data and technologies and specify what future IT infrastructures will look like. Your toolbox includes all key sectors of Data Engineering project management, which not only equips you with the basics for the acquisition, processing and utilization of data but also the foundation for transforming data into relevant information for future industry success. You have gained expertise in structuring and evaluating Big Data through practical project work and derive precise recommendations for action from it (e.g. for product development). You know exactly how to arrange and visualize your results to transform your blueprints into new environments for data analysis.

Become an all-rounder and thereby the interdisciplinary Industry 4.0 switchboard. You are in charge and always hold the reins when turning your strategies, concepts and solutions into new industrial developments and innovations. You have gained the relevant expertise through practical project work. You apply all modules of system engineering: analysis, planning, development and adaptation. You know which technical, economic and organizational requirements that each Industry 4.0 project demands and which cross-sectional functions and interfaces need to be integrated to lead them to success. For this purpose, you can rely on your comprehensive expertise on Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Portfolio Management and Quality Management.

International Summer School

At the end of the first semester you will take part in a two- to three-week summer school where you will expand your professional experience through accompanying case studies and project work. The program takes place at one of our international partner universities.

And last but not least – your master thesis

The master thesis in your last semester will complete your studies. In your master thesis, you will address concrete and practical questions in the area of Industry 4.0. The master thesis can be completed in cooperation with businesses, whether it be a large corporation, small- or medium-sized enterprise or start-up.
