The Master of Science in Industry 4.0

Your Study Program at a glance

The study program (full-time) is divided into the basic study period, which comprises two semesters; and then two more which entail the study abroad/internship/entrepreneurship (XU Garage) and the Master Thesis. The first period is focused on program-specific modules and the second period, which comprises modules of high specialization and the following a set of options:

  • to study further abroad or
  • to complete an internship or
  • to develop your own start-up idea in the XU Garage.

The program concludes with the final thesis (master’s thesis).

The Master’s in Industry 4.0 prepares students to lead and manage the technological transformation in manufacturing, driven by advancements in IoT, AI, robotics, and data analytics. This program focuses on integrating technology, business, and economics to tackle the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The curriculum is divided into three main areas:

  1. Industrial Technology Engineering: Students develop technical skills in smart product innovation, smart factories, data management, and cyber-physical systems.
  2. Economics/Business Management: The program covers strategic and organizational development, equipping students to manage Industry 4.0 transformations in companies.
  3. Economics: Students explore network economics, focusing on the impact of Industry 4.0 on global value systems and business models.

Specializations include smart cities, robotics and automation, and industrial applications of Industry 4.0 technologies. The program also emphasizes modern leadership, research methods, and consulting techniques, preparing students to conduct applied research and lead projects.

Additionally, students have the option to participate in an international summer school and undertake a research project, which culminates in their master’s thesis.

The consecutive Master’s program is offered as a four-semester (120 ECTS CP) full-time and part-time programme, therefore as an fourth, or eight-semester Master’s program (120 ECTS CP). Both study variants form the second stage in the two-stage Bachelor’s-Master’s education system and
